Mothers Union Turns Used Books into Support for ABM Projects!
This year marked the 32nd annual Book Fair organized by the Mothers Union of Christ Church, Hamilton. Held in the six weeks preceding Easter each year, the Book Fair attracts support from the wider community as well as members of the congregation. Every year thousands of high-quality used books on a wide range of topics are donated. A total of over $350,000 has been raised since it first began, an amazing sum considering that the average price of a book is about $4.
Over the years, the funds raised have supported ABM and AID projects including improving water supply in Vanuatu and Myanmar, assistance following an earthquake in the Philippines and a woman’s refuge in Honiara.
The success of the Book Fair has only been possible because of the support of the local community, who have donated books, and the generosity of the proprietors of vacant shops who have provided the space free of charge.
This year Hamilton Mothers Union branch was surprised and delighted to learn that they had received a Community Award on Australia Day to recognise their contribution to community projects. A large group of members attended the Australia Day ceremony to see President Linley Bramall accept the award on behalf of the branch.
