How Australian churches commemorated the New Guinea Martyrs in 2024
From Brisbane to rural Victoria, via Sydney, our photo gallery shows some of the many ways in which Australian Anglicans commemorated the Martyrs of New Guinea this year.
The three photos from Holy Trinity, Woolloongabba (Anglican Church Southern Queensland) show the Martyrs Cross presented to the parish in memory of John Duffill as well as a sketch of the same cross made by Olen Hendeson, and also presented to the parish.
The church of St John’s Bulimba (Anglican Church Southern Queensland) featured Papua New Guinean mission items in their sanctuary, and St Stephen’s, Rutherglen (Diocese of Wangaratta) displayed a beautiful tapa cloth cope in their church.
St Luke’s Enmore (Diocese of Sydney) was delighted to welcome the Right Rev’d Reginald Makale as their Martyrs Day speaker.
ABM continues to be inspired in new ways by the stories of the New Guinea Martyrs just as we continue to be inspired by the ongoing work of the Anglican Church in Papua New Guinea, as shared by Bishop Reginald during his Martyrs Day address.
We hope these images will inspire you to commemorate the Martyrs in your parish next year.
