Gawura School celebrates NAIDOC Week with dancing
Gawura School Project Update
At the end of Term 2 (July), Gawura celebrated NAIDOC Week.
This included a beautiful assembly focusing on the theme of “For Our Elders”.
The Gawura students had prepared for this by participating in cultural dance lessons from the beginning of Term 1, with Aunty Rayma Johnston, supported by the National Indigenous Australians Agency. Aunty Rayma, is a Wiradjuri woman and was previously a member of the prestigious Bangarra Dance Company.
The students greatly enjoyed the dancing. And during NAIDOC Week they performed some of the dances they had learned at the NAIDOC Week Assembly. These included a travel dance, a welcome dance, a cod fish, djirri djirri, willy wagtail dance, a speak the truth dance and a farewell dance.
The students enjoyed these lessons so much, that the school hopes to continue the lessons until the end of year.
