Brisbane Archbishop Visits the Torres Strait to Learn about Climate Change Impacts
Partly funded by a grant from an ABM Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Mission Grant, the Archbishop of Brisbane is visiting the Torres Strait Islands to witness firsthand the impacts of climate change on those islands.
Archbishop Jeremy Greaves is accompanied by Aunty Dr Rose Elu, a senior Sabai elder and executive member of NATSIAC. Aunty Rose will act as the Archbishop’s guide throughout the trip.
She said, “I have shared with the Archbishop how rising sea levels are severely impacting our low-lying islands and asked him early last year if he would accompany me to the Torres Strait Islands so he can see the impacts himself.”
This visit is the fulfillment of that request.
The trip has received funding of $5,000 from ABM’s Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Mission Grants upon the recommendation of Torres Strait Islander appraisers within NATSIAC.
ABM will be sharing stories about the trip as they are produced by Anglican Focus and the Anglican Church Southern Queensland’s Justice Unit who will be filming stories about climate change effects.
