Myanmar Earthquake Emergency Appeal

On Friday 28 March 2025, a magnitude 7.7 earthquake struck central Myanmar.

The death toll has now risen to over 2,000 people, with nearly 4,000 injured.

People – some still alive – continue to be uncovered from the rubble.

ABM AID is raising funds for emergency relief efforts in Mandalay and Taungoo. Food packs, water and mosquito nets are the immediate needs of those displaced by the earthquake.

Your support is urgently needed. Please donate today.

Public buildings, including schools and religious buildings, have been damaged, along with shops and houses.

In the towns of Mandalay and Taungoo, many people are afraid to sleep in their houses and are instead sleeping outside. So far, thousands of families have been displaced, including over 200 families identified in urban Anglican communities.

In Mandalay, Bishop David Nyi Nyi Naing and his diocesan staff started relief distribution on the weekend.

Plans are underway to reach 1,000 affected people. A food pack consisting of rice, curry and one bottle of water will be provided to people who have been displaced.

Mosquito nets are also being provided to families who are staying out of their homes, sleeping on sidewalks and in open spaces in fear of another earthquake, or of buildings collapsing around them.

ABM AID has also received stories from Sagaing, the city closest to the earthquake’s epicenter. Damage in Sagaing is believed to be much worse than Mandalay.

Sagaing Hospital has been treating earthquake survivors since Friday and has run out of supplies; patients are treated in open spaces as the hospital was also damaged by the earthquake. Volunteers are helping doctors and nurses tend to the injured and providing food and water.

Bishop David is hoping to visit Sagaing today to assess the damage wrought by the earthquake.

He has called for urgent assistance from the international community:

“There is immediate need for food, water and shelter for people affected by the earthquake.”

There are also reports of rural churches being damaged, but with communications and power down in many parts of the country, further details are still coming to light.

At the moment, the information coming out of Mandalay Diocese is that people are in urgent need of temporary shelter and food.

“Four churches, the diocesan office building, and two church halls have been affected,” said Stella Zin Zin Wah, CPM’s Development Director.

The Church in the Province of Myanmar is providing immediate support to those affected.

They have asked ABM for our prayers and financial support in this time of crisis.

People are in urgent need. Please donate today.

Funds will go to assist our partner, the Church of the Province of Myanmar, with their emergency response.

Prayer

A prayer for Myanmar, Thailand and other places affected by the Earthquake

From Archbishop Andrew Chan, Anglican Church of Hong Kong

O Lord, who stilled the waves and quieted the winds, who is the sure foundation of our church, and who is the small voice of calm that spoke through the earthquake, wind, and fire, have mercy on us.

When the very earth beneath our feet gives way, and swallows up countless, have mercy on us.

When the buildings around us collapse in a flash, and rubble is all that is left of our homes, have mercy on us.

When those we love and hold dear in life are snatched away in an instant, when uncertainty and fear are all that is in our hearts, and when all around is tragedy, have mercy on us.

For you alone are our Father of mercies and the God of all consolation. Comfort, Oh Lord, the families who now are gripped by terror in Myanmar and Thailand. Spare the innocent and give strength to those who are still clinging on to life, awaiting rescue. Give hope to the responders and rescuers, that with every fibre of their arms they might give hope to those who are trapped.

Send your Holy Spirit to all the peoples of Myanmar and Thailand, that they may come together in this time of trial, putting down past divisions, and do what ought to be done with one common purpose.

As the earth stops quaking, let our hearts yet be still and firm. Into your healing hands we entrust our path ahead. This we pray in the name of Christ, who is our comforter, our restorer, and our sustainer.

Amen.

AID asks you to donate responsibly.
