Building Community Resilience
Support the Anglican Church of Papua New Guinea to better serve their communities by strengthening its systems and upskilling its people.
Change is afoot in the Anglican Church of Papua New Guinea and AID is supporting the church to prepare for the changes. Most of the funding to the church from the longstanding Church Partnership Program, funded by the Australian Government, has been paused pending the church’s further developing its capabilities in governance, management, and program implementation.
Molly tells some of this story:
“My name is Molly Ifoki, and I am a former Diocesan Project Officer of the Church Partnership Program (CPP) in the Anglican Church of Papua New Guinea (ACPNG).
“When I finished from the office, I left full of blessing because deep down in my heart I felt that my Heavenly Father had prepared me well though all the knowledge and skills I gained in trainings I undertook whilst with CPP.
“Planning, monitoring and evaluation, Agents of Change, Asset-based Community Development (ABCD), budgeting, acquitting, and reporting were an impact in my life which I took to heart and began planning to see changes in the surrounding communities I lived in.
“When I started fellowshipping with the Mothers’ Union in the community, and then when I was elected to the Board of Management as the Vice Chairlady of the St Andrew’s Primary School, an Anglican Agency School, I knew this was my opportunity.

“I conducted planning training with the Board members, teachers, and community representatives to put together the plan for the school which guarantees free tuition from the Government of PNG.
“Through the planning, I briefly spoke about projects, especially ABCD, which caught their attention. And a poultry project was proposed for the school. However, from the review of the school, we identified that we lacked many things. The project will be implemented after we have leadership training and guidelines in place. We will also have a financial manual and good governance guidelines which I have drafted, and which will be reviewed soon.
“I believe that Asset-based Community Development is the way forward for ACPNG. The secret to success and change is to be part of the community and earn people’s trust. Then all will go well.
“I appreciate all that the Anglican Church, through the support of ABM AID, has done for me and I would like to encourage my colleagues who were with CPP to extend the knowledge and skills they have received to serve the communities they live in.”
The church is also rolling out the Anglican Communion’s Agents of Change course with an increasing number of parishes and providing training in the Five Marks of Mission as well as in Safeguarding. This coming year will also be used to redesign the church’s Adult Literacy and Numeracy Program, enhancing the harnessing of local strengths.
