Sustainable Communities

Jesus came that we might have abundant life, and ABM AID believes that that life extends to the whole person living in community.

ABM AID’s Sustainable Communities work is done in collaboration with Anglican Church Partners across the Pacific, Africa, the Middle East, South East Asia and Sri Lanka, to help deliver grassroots community-driven development. We believe that local communities are best-placed to know what programs they want and what assistance they need from our partners. Partners are encouraged to work closely with communities to ensure communities are “in the driving seat” of development work.

AID works closely with our church partners, supporting them to be effective and efficient, so that they, in turn, can bring Jesus’ promise of abundant life to the communities they work with.

With our partners, we promote a strengths-based approach to development that is inclusive, encourages participation, empowers women, and fosters positive and sustainable change. Our Sustainable Communities work supports local communities to address climate change, gender equality, disability and social inclusion, to work for improved food security and livelihoods, improved access to water, sanitation and hygiene, adult literacy, and some early childhood projects. With sustainability in mind, we also encourage our partners both to work with their own governments, and to help their local communities advocate for better services from government at all levels.

AID’s Sustainable Communities work creates opportunities for people to enjoy life in all its fullness, through five key programs:

  • Environment, Climate and WASH – helping communities adapt to and mitigate the effects of a changing climate including improved WASH (Water, Sanitation, and Hygiene) facilities.
  • Livelihoods – enhancing income opportunities through improved farming, market access, and product sales.
  • Education – improving quality and reach of primary and secondary schools, adult literacy programs and community development training.
  • Gender – improving the lives of women and girls and their entire communities. While integrated across all programs, some partner, such as the Anglican Church in Zambia, focus on combating gender-based violence.
  • Emergency Response – supporting partners in timely and effective responses to natural and conflict-driven humanitarian crises.
