Great demand for Wontulp-Bi-Buya courses in Alice Springs and remote communities

This year, 2023, in addition to taking students from North Queensland, Wontulp-Bi-Buya College, based in Cairns, had seventy students from the Northern Territory. People came to Alice Springs to study from communities surrounding Alice Springs, Utopia, Canteen Creek, Mt Isa, Ampilatwatja, Arlparra, Soapy Bore, St Teressa, Papunya, Mt Liebig, and Kintore.

Business and Operations Manager for the college, Davena Monro observed, “There is such a move of God, as we at Wontulp-Bi-Buya College have never promoted our courses in these communities and we still have students waiting to commence in 2024. There is such an eagerness as most students travel close to 10 hours to study in Alice Springs where they participate in two-week study blocks.”

Wontulp-Bi-Buya College was blessed to locate accommodation with good facilities for two five-week blocks in Alice Springs. Due to limited funds, the College has needed to be flexible and change their delivery methods where possible but also ensure that they remain professional and culturally appropriate to stretch and to have funding to cover the costs.

The College has been blessed to take a team to Alice that teaches and undertakes administration, which extends to assisting with all social needs, such as applying for ID, registering and creating emails, and MyGov, then making Abstudy Applications, with little to no support from governmental departments. We have also taken on the catering and had some incredible people come in and even learned to cook the students their traditional foods. There was also a component and opportunity to show and encourage healthy eating and living.
